Match Play at USGA Sr Amateur Rained Out

USGANEWBURGH, Ind. -- Heavy rain fell steadily on Monday, soaking fairways and greens and forcing the suspension of the first round of match play at the USGA Senior Amateur Championship.
Only 19 of 32 scheduled matches were underway at Victoria National Golf Club when the round was suspended at 12:16 p.m. local time. It was cancelled 2 1/2 hours later.
'The amount of rain caused standing water on many of the putting greens and even made some fairways look like little rivers,' said Missy Crisp, the event's chairperson.
'The combination of the heavy rain throughout the day, the time needed for course maintenance, the time for water to recede, and the shortened daylight because of cloud cover made it impossible for us to continue,' Crisp added.
Play will resume at 8:30 a.m. local time Tuesday, with the second round scheduled for the afternoon. The third and quarterfinal rounds will be played Wednesday and the semifinal and final rounds will take place Thursday.
Stroke play medalists Paul Simson and Bill Leonard were both 1-up through two holes when the round was stopped. They were the only two players who broke par after two rounds of stroke play.
