Medalist Song Advances

GLADWYNE, Pa. -- Medalist Aree Song and Virada Nirapathpongporn both cruised to second round victories Thursday at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship. Play was halted at Philadelphia Country Club with one match remaining on the course.
Annie Thurman and Lisa Ferrero are all square through 16 holes of their second round match. The tournament was able to catch up on Thursday after three days of weather problems. First round matches were completed in the morning and all but the aforementioned second-round match were finished later in the day.
Song picked up a pair of 4 and 3 victories Thursday. She knocked off Emily Bastel in her first match, then downed Laura Cross in her second match. Cross had defeated Song's sister, Naree, in the opening round match. Aree Song will face off against Aimee Cho in Friday's third round.
'I think it was pretty close for the front nine, in both matches,' said Aree Song. 'I thought both girls played really well, especially Laura in the second match. I think my irons and my putting are working really well. Those are the two main areas that I'm really liking right now.'
Nirapathpongporn, the eighth seed, defeated Cecilia Barksdale 4 and 3 in the morning. She then returned to the course to knock off Ashley Hoagland 5 and 4. Nirapathpongporn will face Sarah Huarte on Friday with the winner advancing to face the winner of the Cho/Aree Song match.
'I played better this afternoon,' said Nirapathpongporn, the runner up to Michelle Wie in the U.S. Amateur Publinks Championships. 'I think it's good for me to start hitting the shots that I'm capable of because this morning it was just hard to. I think I'm happy where my game is going and it's nice to get it done early.'
Maru Martinez, who gained instant recognition in the morning for defeating Wie, was unable to keep up that outstanding play in the afternoon session. Martinez halved the first three holes before winning the fourth against her second foe, Kwan-Chih Lu.
Lu however caught fire. She won the next four holes en route to her 4 and 3 victory over Martinez.
Defending champion Becky Lucidi moved into the third round with a 4 and 2 win over Hsiao-Ching Lu. In-Bee Park cruised to a 7 and 6 win in her afternoon match, while Paula Creamer held on for a 1-up victory over Ya-Ni Tseng.
Lu will face Lucidi in the featured third-round match up.
'I don't think the scores reflect the level of play,' said Lucidi. 'But I played pretty solid for the most part. The first 27 holes were pretty well put together but I struggled on the last nine. I feel good going into tomorrow. I will have no problems sleeping tonight.'
The Thurman/Ferrero match will be completed Friday morning. The third round as well as the quarterfinals will be played on Friday. The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday and the 36-hole final for Sunday. Thunderstorms are in the forecast for all three days, however, so the schedule could be altered.
