Moore Moves on at Public Links

USGAMAPLE GROVE, Minn. -- Ryan Moore, the 2002 champion, picked up a pair of 5-and-4 victories Thursday to cruise into the quarterfinals at the 2004 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Rush Creek Golf Club.
 
Moore downed Christopher Davidson in his second-round match. Moore then won the first three holes of his third-round match en route to knocking off Jon Veneziano by the same 5-and-4 margin. Moore moves on to face Clay Ogden.
 
Ogden knocked off Terrence Miskell, 1-up, in 20 holes, after a 5-and-4 win over Josh Williams in the second round.
 
Dayton Rose, the 2003 runner-up, outlasted Brian Atkinson, 1-up, in 19 holes in the second round. Rose then downed Brendan Steele, 1-up, in the third round. Rose birdied the second hole against Steele and led the rest of the way. He had been 3-up with seven holes to go, but Atkinson won the 12th and 17th to push the match to the 18th hole.
 
Rose moves on to face William Moore, who earned a 1-up win in 20 holes over Seung-Su Han.
 
Will Claxton claimed the match of the day. After winning 1-up over Daryl Fathauer in the second round, Claxton pushed Danny Green, the 1999 U.S. Mid- Amateur winner, to extra holes with an eagle at the par-5 18th.
 
Claxton, who never led in regulation and trailed by as many as 4-down with six holes to go, birdied the 609-yard, par-5 eighth to win, 1-up, in 26 holes over Green. Claxton will battle Evan Frederick in the quarterfinals.
 
Frederick picked up a 2-and-1 win over Nathan Smith.
 
Sunghoon Kang rolled to a 5-and-3 win over Joshua Wooding in the third round. He moves on to play Dirk Fennie, a 1-up winner over Zack Reeves.
 
Match play continues on Friday with the 18-hole quarterfinal and 18-hole semifinal matches before the 36-hole final on Saturday.
