Moore Rallies to Win US Amateur

2004 U.S. AmateurMAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Ryan Moore won the final four holes Sunday to defeat Luke List, 2-up, to win the U.S. Amateur Championship at Winged Foot Golf Club.
Moore capped off an amazing 2004 season. He won the U.S. Amateur Public Links, the NCAA Individual Championship and the Western Amateur, and on Sunday he became the first medalist from the stroke-play portion of the tournament to win since Tiger Woods in 1996.
'This was the goal at the beginning of the summer,' said Moore, who became the first player in history to win both the Amateur and Pub-Links in the same year. 'I'm not sure what else to say, I'm so excited.'
List was 3-up after the first 18, but after the lunch break he won the first to go 4-up through 19. The lead was trimmed to 1-up when Moore birdied No. 11. List went 2-up again with a 15-foot birdie putt at the 13th, the 31st of the 36-hole final.
Moore won the 15th with a 10-foot birdie putt to go 1-down. He drew even for the first time since the sixth hole of the match at No. 16 when List missed a 6-footer for par.
List hit a tree branch at 17 and could not get up and down for par from 18 feet. Moore, now 1-up, hit a spectacular iron shot to 18, stopping 3 feet from the hole.
List landed in a greenside bunker with his second and when his blast ran several feet by the hole, List conceded the hole and the match to Moore.
'Coming down 17, I knew I had to make a birdie. That was my mindset,' said Moore, who is going to be a senior at UNLV. 'I knew I had to birdie 17 and 18 both. That's just the way I was thinking the whole way coming down. I was just able to execute golf shots.'
'I knew I was the underdog again today. But I thought I could pull it out. You know, it just didn't happen,' said List. 'I came in confident. I really thought I could win.'
Both finalists earn full exemptions into the 2005 U.S. Open and have traditionally been invited to the next Masters, if they remain amateurs. Moore also receives an exemption into the 2005 British Open.
