Ogden Who Defeated Wie Wins Publinx

LEBANON, Ohio -- One day after derailing Michelle Wie's hopes at gaining a berth in the Masters, Clay Ogden rallied for a 1-up victory over Martin Ureta at the U.S. Men's Amateur Public Links championship on Saturday.
Ogden cruised to 5-and-4 win over Wie in the quarterfinals, then won the 16th and 17th holes in his semifinal match to advance to the finals.
Ureta also had an easy match early Friday beating Rory Hie, 4 and 2. Ureta then needed 20 holes to defeat stroke-play medalist Anthony Kim in the semifinals.
Ureta was in control of the match throughout. He opened with a birdie on the first, then moved 3-up as Ogden bogeyed the next two holes at Shaker Run Golf Club. Ureta's lead moved to 4-up when Ogden bogeyed the seventh.
Ogden, a junior-to-be at Brigham Young University, won the eighth, but Ureta birdie No. 9 to regain at 4-up cushion. Ogden started to chip away at the lead on the second nine.
The 20-year-old won the 11th and 12th to get within 2-down and then birdied the par-4 16th to get it to 1-down. They traded wins on 17 and 18 so Ureta led 1-up into the second 18 holes.
After the players hit their approach shots to the 20th hole, there was a weather delay. That hurt Ogden as he double bogeyed that hole to drop back to 2-down.
However, Ogden would birdie the 21st and the match was all square after Ureta double-bogeyed the 22nd hole. Ureta, a junior-to-be at the University of North Carolina, claimed the 26th and 27th holes with a par and a birdie.
Ogden bounced right back to win the next two holes to square the match. Ureta's last win came on the 31st hole when Ogden tripped to a bogey. Ogden birdied the 33rd and 34th holes to move 1-up, his first lead of the day.
Each player birdied the par-5 35th hole, and Ogden closed out the 1-up win by securing par on the last.
Ogden gets a 10-year APL exemption along with the likely invitation to the 2006 Masters. That berth is up to the discretion of Augusta National Golf Club, which has invited every APL winner since 1989. Both Ureta and Ogden are exempt into the 2005 U.S. Amateur to be played August 22-28 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.
