One Co-Medalist Wins One Loses

USGANEWBURGH, Ind. -- Bill Leonard, one of the two stroke-play medalists, collected a 1-up win over David Rasley Wednesday afternoon to advance to the semifinals at the USGA Senior Amateur Championship.
Leonard moves on to face Tom McGraw in the semifinals. McGraw, playing in this event for the first time, took down Robert Mielcarz, 4-and-3 in the quarterfinals. Earlier in the day, Leonard cruised to a 3-and-2 win over 2004 champion Mark Bemowski. Leonard won the first seven holes of that match.
'I did play very solid the first eight holes,' admitted Leonard after beating Bemowski. 'I haven't made any putts until today. When you are playing someone with Mark's record (21-5 in six appearances in the Senior Amateur) you just want to compete and stay in the game and that's what I did.'
Mike Bell, who is playing in his second Senior Amateur, bested Paul Simson, the other stroke-play medalist, by a 4-and-3 margin. Simson had won the British Senior Amateur earlier this year.
Bell will battle Sam Farlow in the other semifinal match. Farlow, a quarterfinalist in 2003, coasted to a 4-and-2 win over Erik Myrmo.
The semifinals and finals are set for Thursday after rain washed out most of Monday's first round action.
