Nationwide TourRALEIGH, N.C. -- Michael Putnam posted a 5-under 66 Friday before second-round play was stopped for the day at the Rex Hospital Open. He stands at 9-under-par 133 midway through round two.

There was a 95-minute weather delay during the round and players returned to the course for just five minutes before the horns blew again. Officials once again pulled players off the course and this time it was for the night.

Second-round action will resume at 8:00 a.m. EDT with the third round tentatively slated to commence at 11:30 a.m.

Erik Compton carded his second straight 4-under 67 to move into second place at minus-8. Cliff Kresge (67) and David Mathis (68) are one stroke further back at 7-under-par 135.

First-round co-leader Paul Claxton is also at 7 under through 14 holes of his second round. Matthew Jones is at minus-7 through eight holes.

Matt Kuchar the other first-round co-leader was struggling on Friday. He was 2 over par through 12 holes and stands at minus-4 and is tied for 18th place.

Putnam trailed the leader by four at the start of his round. He opened with back-to-back pars from the 10th on the TPC at Wakefield Plantation. Putnam, who turned 23 on Thursday, dropped in his first birdie putt on the 12th.

He came right back with a birdie on the 13th. Putnam made the turn at minus-7 thanks to a birdie on No. 18.

Putnam, a three-time all-american at Pepperdine, made it two in a row as he birdied the first. After four straight pars, he birdied the sixth to claim the outright lead.

'I'm just learning that if you play well you can get to the top at any level,' said Putnam, a playoff loser to Darron Stiles four weeks ago at the Rheem Classic. 'Hopefully I'll learn to put four good rounds together and learn to win and learn everything else on this tour before hopefully getting to the next step next year.'

Compton also started on the back nine Friday. He ran off five birdies in a six-hole span from the 12th to jump to 9 under. Compton closed with nine pars and a bogey from there to end one back.

Charlie Wi (69) and Scott Gutschewski (68) are tied for seventh place at 6-under-par 136. They were joined there by Johnson Wagner, who has completed 13 holes, Doug LaBelle II (12 holes) and Brenden Pappas (10 holes).
