04 Mark Christopher Charity Classic RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. -- Jeff Quinney, who won the Oregon Classic two weeks ago, opened with a 7-under-par 64 Thursday to grab a one-shot lead after the first round of the Mark Christopher Charity Classic.

Ricky Barnes, the 2002 U.S. Amateur champion, fired a 6-under-par 65 to join 2003 Monterey Peninsula Classic winner Scott Gutschewski in a tie for second place. They are joined there by Rich Massey, Ron Skayhan and Scott Dunlap.

Quinney got off to a flying start, opening with a birdie at the first. The 25-year-old climbed to minus-2 as he dropped in a birdie on No. 3 at Empire Lakes Golf Club.

The Arizona State alum came right back with a birdie on the fourth. Quinney then reached the par-5 fifth in two shots and sank his eagle try to play the opening five holes in minus-5.

Quinney, the 2000 U.S. Amateur champion, cooled off a little as he parred his next three holes. He then birdied the par-3 ninth from 10 feet out to play the front side in 6-under 29.

'I got off to that great start and then I put it on cruise for a while,' said Quinney. 'You're hitting a lot of irons off the tees and wedges into greens. It is definitely the side to score on.'

The Eugene, Oregon native cruised through the back nine with eight consecutive pars. Quinney rolled in a birdie at the last to grab the outright lead.

'I have a lot of confidence in my game right now,' Quinney said. 'The win took a lot of pressure off my back. I have new goals in mind now. I'm thinking about the top-35 and the top-20 on the money list.'

Barnes birdied the first, then dropped in consecutive birdies from the par-5 fifth. He parred four straight holes around the turn, then caught fire again as he ran off three birdies in a row from the 11th. He parred his final five holes to share second place.

Gutschewski opened with three birdies over his opening nine holes. Around on the front nine, he drained a birdie at the third. He moved to minus-6 as he drained an eagle at the fifth.

Massey stumbled out of the gate with a bogey at the first, but bounced back with consecutive birdies from the par-4 third. He picked up three birdies over a four-hole stretch from the ninth. He tripped to a bogey at 13, but closed with birdies on each of the last three holes to finish at 6 under.

Skayhan bogeyed the 12th, his third, then birdied four of the final six holes on the back nine to make the turn at minus-3. He stumbled to a bogey at the first, but responded with a birdie at the next. He then ran off three consecutive birdies from the fifth to grab a share of second place.

Dunlap opened with back-to-back birdies from the 10th. After he faltered to a bogey on 15, he birdied 17 and 18 to make the turn at 3 under. Dunlap birdied the third and fifth, but dropped a stroke on No. 6. He then birdied his final two holes to get to 6 under.
