The final groups had completed four holes in the second round when play was suspended at 3:03 p.m. ET as thunderstorms rolled into the area.
Sunny skies and warm weather are forecast for Saturday, when the second round is scheduled to re-start at 11:00 a.m. ET.
Before the weather arrived, Gulbis rolled in a 10-foot birdie putt at the par-4 ninth to tie Reilley Rankin and Mi Hyun Kim for the lead.
Rankin and Kim were already in the clubhouse at 8-under-par 134. Kim fired a 5-under 66 in her second round, while Rankin shot a 3-under 68 Friday at Highland Meadows Golf Club.
Sung Ah Yim was alone in fourth place when play was suspended, having just made the turn at minus-7.
Lorie Kane fired a 5-under 66 and shares fifth place in the clubhouse with Diana D'Alessio (69), Michelle Estill (70) and Karen Weiss (69). Paula Creamer and first-round leader Liselotte Neumann were also at minus-6 through 11 holes.
Annika Sorenstam went 2 under through 11 holes of her second round and was among a group of seven players tied for 14th place at 4 under.
Se Ri Pak -- a four-time champion here -- was also at minus-4 through 11 holes.
The projected cut stood at plus-1 when play was suspended. Among those on the outside looking in at the moment is defending champion Heather Young, who won as Heather Bowie last year.
