Rhoden Captures John Elway Classic


DENVER, Col. - Former major league pitcher Rick Rhoden exploded for 36 points on Sunday to win the Sun Microsystems John Elway Celebrity Classic by three points. Rhoden finished the two-round event with 56 points in the modified stableford scoring system.
Rhoden trailed Al Del Greco by eight points entering the final round but out- scored the former placekicker by 11 points on Sunday. Del Greco ended alone in second place with 53 points.
Rhoden, the all-time wins leader on the Celebrity Tour with 26, picks up $30,000 for the victory.
Pierre Larouche finished alone in third place with 45 points. Former NFL quarterback Mark Rypien was one point back with 44, followed by Dan Quinn, who had 40.
Actor Jack Wagner came in sixth place with 39 points with Ken Reitz just behind him with 38. Dale Tallon posted 37 points to come in ninth place.
Tournament host John Elway managed to total just 19 points. He shared 39th place with Tom Dreesen.
