Seven Tied at Canadian PGA

CAMBRIDGE, Ontario -- Seven players posted matching rounds of 4-under-par 68 Thursday to share the opening-round lead of the Canadian PGA Championship.
Eduardo Herrera, Kenneth Staton, Kevin Durkin, Ryan Gioffre, Doug Barron, Bill Lunde and Steve Runge share top spot on the leaderboard at Whistle Bear Golf Club.
There was a downpour that halted play late on Thursday with three groups on the course. The nine players returned at 8:15 p.m. ET and all 156 players completed their rounds.
The leaders took different paths to the top of the leaderboard. Lunde was the only player who was bogey-free in his round, but Durkin used an eagle, four birdies and two bogeys.
Herrera and Barron, former PGA Tour veterans, each mixed six birdies and two bogeys in his round, while Staton made it around with five birdies and one bogey.
'If the wind stops blowing you might see a 64 or a 65,' said Staton, who tied for fifth at The Reese's Cup Classic earlier in the month. 'With the wind and the firmness of the course, it'll be difficult and not much lower.'
Runge and Gioffre mixed seven birdies and three bogeys on Thursday and the good start was especially helpful for Gioffre. He has made two cuts in nine starts and ranks 198th on the money list.
'We've been all over the map and it's been tough to find a routine. It's my first year out here so it seems like every week is a learning experience for me. You try and play aggressively but not stupid,' said Gioffre. 'The key for me out here is driving the ball. It you hit it in the rough you're almost playing defense.'
Dave Christensen hit a 3-iron from 234 yards out into the cup for a double-eagle at the par-5 ninth, his last hole of the round.
He finished at 3-under 69 and is tied for eighth place with Jeff Gove, Dave Stockton, Jr., Jeff Gallagher, Scott Petersen, Brent Schwarzrock, Scott Dunlap, Paul Gow, Rob Bradley, Martin Price, Eli Zackheim, Tomohiro Watanabe, Chris James, Ian Hutchings and Simon Cooke.
