Sheehan Announces Selections

KUTZTOWN, Penn. -- United States Solheim Cup captain Patty Sheehan named Heather Bowie and Kelli Kuehne to this year's American team on Sunday after the completion of the Wachovia LPGA Classic.
The event was the last tournament for players to automatically qualify for the squad. The top-10 made the team and will represent the U.S. at Barseback Golf & Country Club in Malmo, Sweden on September 12-14.
Juli Inkster (fifth appearance), Rosie Jones (sixth) , Beth Daniel (seventh), Michele Redman (third), Laura Diaz (second), Cristie Kerr (second), Meg Mallon (seventh), Kelly Robbins (sixth), Wendy Ward (second) and Angela Stanford (first) made the team on points.
Bowie will be participating in her first Solheim Cup and had a chance to earn one of the 10 automatic picks Sunday as she sat 11th on the table. She struggled to a five-over 77 and tied for 29th to miss out on the spot but Sheehan tabbed the 28-year-old, who is 26th on the LPGA Tour money list.
The Kuehne selection raises some eyebrows as Kuehne is not enjoying one of her finest seasons on tour. She has posted one top-10 in 19 starts this season, is 43rd on the money list and was the only winless team member in last year's Solheim Cup when she went 0-3.
Among the notable snubs for the team were U.S. Women's Open winner Hilary Lunke, Emilee Klein, who played last year at Interlachen, and Pat Hurst, a veteran of three Solheim Cups.
The European team will be finalized on Monday after completion of The Wales WPGA Championship on the Ladies European Tour. The top seven on their points list automatically go and currently that is: Annika Sorenstam, Sophie Gustafson, Laura Davies, Elisabeth Esterl, Iben Tinning, Ana B. Sanchez and Mhairi McKay.
Monday afternoon, European captain Catrin Nilsmark will announce her five
captain's picks. Carin Koch, Paula Marti, Suzann Pettersen, Karine Icher, Raquel Carriedo, Maria Hjorth, Catriona Matthew and Nabisco Championship winner Patricia Meunier-Lebouc are the likely candidates for Nilsmark to choose from.
The eighth staging of the Solheim Cup is scheduled for September 12-14 and is being staged in Sweden for the first time. The U.S. won last year's Solheim Cup and owns a 5-2 mark in the Ryder Cup like event.
