2006 Henrico County OpenGLEN ALLEN, Va. -- Peter Tomasulo opened with a 7-under-par 65 on Thursday to take a two-shot lead after one round of the Henrico County Open.

Jeff Burns sits in second place after a 5-under-par 67, and Joel Kribel is third following a 4-under-par 68 at The Dominion Club.

Sitting one shot further back in a tie for fourth place are Eric Axley, Johnson Wagner, Fran Quinn, Matt Hendrix, Chris Nallen, Paul Claxton and Keoke Cotner.

The scoring average for Thursday was 73.622, the highest first-round average in tournament history. This is, after all, where Notah Begay III became the first Nationwide Tour player to shoot a 59 in 1998, and where the worst winning score in the last four years was a 20 under par.

'There aren't going to be any records for low scoring this year,' said Kribel. '[The course] is in great shape. Every player I've talked to is really happy with the way it's playing. Everybody's got to deal with it.'

Wind made controlling shots difficult at the par-72 layout.

'(The course is) playing tough out there. Anytime you hit it in the rough it seems you have to chip it out sideways,' said Tomasulo. 'I knew it was going to be a long day and I was going to have to really grind it out. Luckily I made a few putts and was able to cruise along.'

Tomasulo's round was anything but ordinary. Beginning on the back nine, Tomasulo opened with a bogey at the 10th hole. He birdied two straight after that, double bogeyed the par-4 14th, then birdied 15 and 18 to make the turn at 1 under.

Tomasulo birdied the par-5 second before going on a tear beginning at the par-5 fourth, where he rolled in a 30-foot putt for eagle.

Three straight birdies followed, as Tomasulo took the lead.

'I played the par-5s well, which you need to do to have a good round,' said Tomasulo. 'Other than that, I made a couple of good putts -- hit it close and added 'em up.'

Defending champion Chad Collins leads a group of 13 players who are tied for 11th place at 2-under-par 70. Seventeen players are knotted one stroke further back in 24th place.
