Trio on Top at Virginia Beach Open

Jonathan Byrd fired a 7-under 65 on Friday to join David Kirkpatrick and Trevor Dodds atop the leaderboard through two rounds of the Buy.Com Virginia Beach Open. The trio's total of 11-under-par 133 bettered the previous 36-hole record for this event by six strokes.
Kirkpatrick shot a second-round 67 while Dodds posted a 68. First-round leader Deane Pappas carded an even-par 72 over the TPC of Virginia Beach for a share of fourth place at eight-under 136 with Kelly Gibson, who shot 68.
Byrd, a rookie on the 2001 Buy.Com Tour who captured his first victory in South Carolina two weeks ago, parred the first four holes before birdieing the fifth and eighth to climb to six-under for the tournament at the turn. He added five birdies over a six-hole stretch on the back side, culminating in a 15-foot birdie putt at the 17th.
'I made about three par putts over six feet,' said Byrd. 'Other than that it was just pretty easy pars and a lot of chance for birdies. I was thinking I'm just going to try and shoot a good number and I felt like anything under par would be good and I would be in good position for the weekend.'
Charley Hoffman and Jeff Freeman each tied the course record with 64s on Friday join Chris Couch (65), Brenden Pappas (70) and defending champion Ryuji Imada at 7-under 137.
Imada, Mike Heinen and David Berganio, Jr. established the old two-day mark of 139 in last year's inaugural tournament.
