Wind Brings Day One to a Halt in Beijing

BEIJING -- Heavy wind caused the suspension of the first round of the Johnnie Walker Classic on Thursday.

Play was halted originally at 10:15 a.m. local time and the players never returned to Pine Valley Golf Resort and Country Club. Only half of the field teed off and no one completed their first round.

The field is scheduled to be back in position at 6:30 a.m. Friday local time, or 6:30 p.m. ET Thursday night. Those who did not start their first rounds on Thursday are scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. The second round is not expected to be completed until Saturday and players will remain in threesomes off split tees in the third round in an effort to get in 72 holes.

'We had very strong winds this morning and from 9.45 a.m. the intensity increased,' said tournament director Mike Stewart. 'The balls were moving on the first, sixth and 14th greens and we suspended play. We monitored the winds and it was just too strong for us to get the players out.'

Adam Scott, the 10th ranked player in the world, is in the lead at 3 under par through 10 holes. He started on the back nine Thursday and birdied both par-5s, the 13th and 16th, then closed his nine with a birdie at 18.

France's Jean-Francois Lucquin leads a group tied for second place at 2 under par. He is through 13 holes, while Korea's K.J. Choi is through nine and Spain's Jose Manuel Lara completed five holes.

Sergio Garcia is 1 under par through 10 holes and is tied for fifth place. Alastair Forsyth (13), Emanuele Canonica (10), former British Open champion Paul Lawrie (10), Ter-Chang Wang (10), Soren Hansen (nine) and David Bransdon (six) joined Garcia at 1 under par.

Ernie Els, a two-time winner and third-ranked player in the world, is 1 over par through nine holes. Els' countryman Retief Goosen, the No. 5 player in the world rankings, has yet to tee off in round one.

Neither has Colin Montgomerie, Thomas Bjorn or defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez.
