USGAFLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Dave Womack birdied the first two holes Thursday and never trailed en route to winning the U.S. Mid-Amateur at Forest Highlands Golf Club.

Womack and Ryan Hybl matched pars on the final two holes as Womack held on for the 1-up victory.

'Words can't explain it. I am so thrilled,' Womack exclaimed. 'I did not expect this at all. It's amazing.'

After winning the first two holes, Hybl converted a 4-foot birdie putt on the par-5 fifth to get back within 1-down. Womack came right back to birdie the sixth, from 35 feet out, and his lead grew to 3-up as Hybl bogeyed No. 10.

Womack, 27, could not save par from the greenside rough at the par-3 12th, then Hybl drained a 10-foot birdie putt on the 15th to get within 1-down. Hybl bogeyed No. 17 to give Womack a 2-up lead after the morning 18 of the 36-hole final.

Hybl, who needed seven extra holes to defeat last year's runner-up Carlton Forrester in the semifinals, bogeyed the 19th hole to drop 3-down for the second time in the match.

The 25-year-old Hybl birdied the 20th and 22nd holes to again get within 1-down. The duo matched pars on each of the next seven holes.

The turning point came on the 31st hole. Womack found a hazard off the tee, but managed to save par on the par-5. Hybl found deep rough with his second shot and was unable to advance his ball with his third. Hybl took a drop for his fourth, then pitched inside a foot, but the bogey gave Womack a 2-up cushion with five holes to go.

'I go from thinking I was getting all square to going 2-down and that just deflated me,' Hybl admitted. 'But I had a chance on 18 and I just didn't execute.'

Hybl, the assistant golf coach at the University of Georgia, got back within 1-down as Womack bogeyed the 34th hole. Womack held off Hybl as the pair parred the final two holes.

With the victory, Womack likely will earn an invitation to the 2007 Masters if he remains an amateur.

'It hasn't sunk in,' Womack stated. 'It is just unbelievable. I've always dreamed about going over there and playing.'
