Thats Why They Tee it Up

RSS

As is the case in almost any sport, it would be too easy and less than exciting if the best team always took home the prize. All right, you can throw Duke out of the mix, they win everything in sight, but keep in mind they are a team which the college game has seen before.

But heading into the Mens SEC Championships this past weekend, the odds were good the Florida Gators would win their 8th event of the year, as they had finished behind just one conference foe the entire season.

As fate would have it, things did not fall into place for Buddy Alexanders team, as the Georgia Bulldogs captured their first win of the year, edging their league rival by a single shot. Disappointed, is an accurate word to describe Florida falling short after talking to Alexander earlier this week.

In Baton Rouge, La., the women held their SEC Championships, with the Vanderbilt Commodores taking home their first ever conference title in womens golf. It is not that Vandy isnt deserving, but more for the fact of finally breaking through in one of the years marquee events.

Martha Freitag has assembled a rock solid team, but I along with many others have been waiting for them to step up and show just how talented they really are. Quite honestly, I was looking for Auburn or Georgia to leave the Bayou with the hardware. But again, this is why they play the game.

The Clemson Tigers were the best of the best on the mens side just one a year ago. But after capturing the national championship last May, Larry Penleys team had not returned to the winners circle since. That is until this past weekend, when the Tigers took care of business as they won their second straight ACC title. It was this event in 2003 which kick started a first in college golf - a team winning a conference, regional, and national title all in the same year.

Can Clemson repeat the feat? Only time will tell, but never count out a team that can draw on positive experience.

We are off and running as the post season is front and center. Be sure to watch College Central presented by PING tonight at 10:30 p.m. ET to get you up to speed with all that is happening in college golf.
