ONAWAY, Mich. -- Set on 300 acres about a 30-minute drive north of Gaylord on I-75, Black Lake Golf Club is a United Auto Workers-owned, public golf course. It consistently rates as one of Michigan's best public golf courses. Golf Magazine rated it No. 7 in the state for 2010.
Black Lake G.C., opened in 2000, was designed by Rees Jones -- his only venture into Michigan -- and plays more than 7,000 yards from the championship tees. Hardwoods frame each hole, and you'll find some large waste bunkers, characteristic of Jones' style in the Carolinas, where he has completed much of his work.
There are five sets of tees at Black Lake Golf Club, making the golf course playable for all handicaps. A full practice range sits on site, plus putting and chipping greens. The clubhouse is home to a pro shop and restaurant with a large lunch menu.
