How to play PGA Tour stop The Greenbrier Classic

This week's PGA Tour stop is a new one for 2010 - though it's one of America's most historic golf retreats: The Greenbrier Resort, host of the Greenbrier Classic, a stop on contract with the Tour for the next six years. America will be reacquainting itself with a classic.

Long a retreat for U.S. Presidents and dating back to 1778, today there are three 18-hole golf courses at the Greenbrier, plus a 40,000-square-foot spa, casino and loads of Allegheny Mountain adventure. And good news, the public can enjoy it all – for a price.

The tour will play the Greenbrier's Old White course this week, the resort's oldest, opening in 1914. It was designed by C.B. Macdonald – who is enjoying a posthumous revival, thanks in part to Old Macdonald, a tribute course opening out at Bandon Dunes in 2010.

Resort guest green fees for Old White are $240, plus $20 for a mandatory forecaddie.

The Old White is the main draw at Greenbrier these days, but the resort's Greenbrier course has hosted both a Solheim Cup (1994) and Ryder Cup (1979). The Seth Raynor design was redesigned by Jack Nicklaus in 1977 and costs $195 peak season.

The third course in the bunch is the Meadows, considered the most photogenic of the three courses. It was redesigned in 1999 and asks $165 peak season.

Those not registered at the 721-room Greenbrier Resort can play the courses, but there is a $60 surcharge to do so. To book golf at the Greenbrier, you can call 800-453-4858 or fill out an online request form.
