Morning Drive: Tiger Woods Player of the Year Debate

Watch 'Morning Drive' weekdays at 7AM ET.and then a couple guys who are very well versed with the PGA Tour , Bill and Claude Harmon. So be interesting to get your takes now as we get into the PGA Tour . Claude, your discussion before giving away who your picks are, do you think it's as wide open race? Has this been Benny [unk] or do you think there's one prohibitive favor? -Well I think there's a lot of guys this year that have done you know, a body of work that could worn having a player of the year category. In the past, I think we've been spoiled by Tiger Woods with the amount of majors he's won and how he's been at the top of the leader boards pretty much every week that he plays. But there are cases to be beg Mark, I think for everybody that's in the mix. -Well I think there are and this is my 5th consecutive day in morning drive which is a lot for me. But I still can't figure out-- I can't get myself to ignore certain criteria. I can't ignore Mickelson's win at the Scottish Open and more importantly I can't ignore where Henrik Stenson came from just like Ben Hogan got the player of the year after his accident, horrific accident in 1949. There are certain,an instructor Mark, you know, Sean Foley gets criticized as much as Tiger Woods does for the changes that they're making and if you've got a player that's won 5 times and has put up the numbers that Tiger Woods has put up over the last 2 years. The stuff that they're working on is working. I think Tiger Woods is as you said Bill, he spoiled us, he made us think that he could do this-- week-in week-out. -Yeah. -But trust me the stuff that Sean and Tiger are working on regardless of some bad rounds. But if you win 5 times. -It doesn't make any difference about their work. -If you win 5 times. -Basically. -You're doing the right stuff. -And really quick, there are 5 total candidates on this list. Of course we touched on Tiger Woods , the guy that you said should get it based on your system would be Henrik Stenson and then you have to throw in Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott . -Phil Mickelson won 3 times and a major this year. And came close to shooting 59 on the PGA Tour . -And it's weird to me how the Scottish Open really isn't factored in as far as included with the 3 wins that
Overdrive: Keys to victory ... and looking good
Lauren Thompson, Paige MacKenzie and Damon Hack discuss the key to playing Muirfield's 18th hole during the Presidents Cup. Watch 'Morning Drive' every day at 7AM ET.remarkable over the years seeing whether it's a European team. Seve Ballesteros, Colin Montgomerie , Ian Poulter making the key putt on the 18th hole. To me, it's about the putter. You have to find the fairway, for sure, to put yourself in position. But the U.S. team has to make putts on the 18th green to get it done. -All right. Let's talk about two of the players right now. Both are inside the top 30 in the world-- Matsuyama who had two Top 10 majors this year, while Spieth notched a PGA Tour win. Damon, this question is for you. Which player will have a bigger impact in the 2014 majors, Matsuyama or Spieth? -It's such a tough call. We're talking about two future stars in the game that are already playing like present stars in the game. You saw what Matsuyama did with the two Top Tens in the majors. Jordan Spieth winning at the Deere. Nine top tens-- -Uh-huh. -Way from no status to a fully-fledged member and a Presidents Cup member. -Huge. -I believe Jordan Spieth just was-- I think he has a little bit more maturity to his game. To me, he-- -Okay. -seem as a 16-year-old as an AJGA guy to now a PGA Tour winner. He has something special about him. I think he's had a better season than Matsuyama next-- -Okay. -year. -I'm gonna goalways seems the Europeans making that key putt on the 18th green. Colin Montgomerie , Ian Poulter Seve Ballesteros-- you name it. To me, one of the reasons U.S. lost at Medinah last year was because they couldn't make any putts on 17 and 18. U.S. has to make putts this time around at Muirfield Village. -All right. Let's talk about these two guys right here. Both are inside the Top 30 in the world. Hideki Matsuyama who had two Top Tens in majors this year, while Jordan Spieth-- a lot of us have talked about in a quite a bit-- notched a PGA Tour win and also earned that status. Which player will have a bigger impact in the 2014 majors this year? Jordan Spieth, or Hideki Matsuyama? -Both guys wearing shades, their futures are so bright. I lean Spieth. I think he has a little more maturity to his game-- the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, victory at the Deere, nine Top Tens versus Matsuyama with the two Top Tens in major championships. I
Harmon: 'Self doubt' the root of Tiger's problems
Billy Harmon discusses with Kelly Tilghman Tiger Woods' "self doubt" when playing majors. Watch 'Morning Drive' Weekdays at 7AM ET.with Ballesteros. Took a 2-iron out and hit up against the wall. Jay Haas told me in all the years he played with Tom Watson. He had never seen him changed clubs once he picked the club. He never won another major championship after that moment. Tiger, I guess we could say a post-scandal maybe. I would never use a word self-doubt. Why is it hard for Tiger Woods up until that point? His putting now to me reeks of self-doubt. He's become very ordinary in that regard. It's hard to use that word when we're talking about Tiger Woods' ordinary. But if you look at that putt he hit on the first hole on Sunday from 4 feet. It was weak.
