Overdrive: Tiger wins major or Phil wins U.S. Open?
Lauren Thompson, Billy Harmon and Damon Hack discuss which will happen first: Tiger Woods wins a major or Phil Mickelson wins the U.S. Open? Watch 'Morning Drive' every day at 7AM ET.more topics right now. Billy, you're first up. Graham DeLaet, David Hearn, Mike Weir , Brad Fritsch, Stephen Ames , are among the notables in the field this week at the RBC Canadian Open. Which Canadian do you believe is gonna have the best finish? -DeLaet. He's one of the best ball strikers on tour. Glen Abbey is a great ball striker. Of course, he's at the top of the list for the most-- all the ball striking stats. Having a good year, I think that's a no-brainer. -He really is. But he looks like a player that's ready to break through for that first PGA Tour victory. You watched him at the Travelers, you watched him at Colonial. He does hit the ball center of the clubface, almost had a-- -Yes. -I think he's gonna be the high Canadian this week. -Who are you going with? -Oh, man. You know what? DeLaet's a really good choice. -But-- -Easy one to go for. -All right. -Okay. But right now, let's talk about our Open champ, Phil Mickelson . Of course, we can't say enough about him this week on Morning Drive. Will more PGA Tour players be taking that driver out of the bag just like Phil did after his success with the 3 wood? -I don't think so. To me, this is just Phil being Phil. He's won with two drivers, no drivers, this crazy 3 wood, this kind of semi-2 wood. This is Phil. You know, being excited about the game. And obviously, he's found some symmetry and some comfort with this 3 wood. But I think most players wanna have a driver in their bag. Most players aren't as talented as Phil Mickelson to be able to have five or six wedges and no driver. -True. -You know, years ago, the club he's using was
Morning Drive: Ginella-Harmon caddie race at GC HQ
Matt Ginella takes on Billy Harmon in a caddie race through the Golf Channel Studios to reach the Morning Drive set.the hour. Yes, we've been pumping up the fact that, yes, the PGA Tour has banned caddy races and they did it for safety purposes. We understand that. I guess we're not as concerned about safety. So, what we've done, we've pitted, yes, the very spry Matt Ginella, our travel expert, against 63-year-old Billy Harmon. He's one of the top instructors in the game, but for many years, also a caddy for Jay Haas and they were very successful. And it was Billy Harmon who threw down the [unk] and said, I can take you. So,
Where does Mickelson rank among all-time greats?
Charlie Rymer and Gary Williams discuss where Phil Mickelson ranks among the greatest of all time. Watch 'Morning Drive' Weekdays at 7AM ET.of two days to really kinda sit here and look at what Phil Mickelson has accomplished-- not only for the weekend, but now in his career. Five major championships, three of the four majors on his resumé. Where is he going in the Pantheon of all-time greats? -You know, there's so many different ways to look at it. You can look at the rankings, basically, for golf courses where you have classic architecture versus modern architecture. There's really no way to compare a Merion to a Kiawah or at Whistlingto that top ten. -Yeah. -But if you're gonna make room for Phil Mickelson in the top ten-- and I'm certainly very respectful of what he's accomplished in the game-- make no mistake about that, folks. But my question is, who do you throw out? -Right. -Do you throw out Bobby Jones ? Do you throw out Harry Vardon? Who do you throw out of the top ten players that had more majors than he has? Somebody has got to make room for Phil. And I'm not gonna be the guy that throws Bobby Jones out of the top ten or throws Harry Vardon out of the top ten to make room for Phil. -Yeah. I'm not
Harmon: 'Self doubt' the root of Tiger's problems
Billy Harmon discusses with Kelly Tilghman Tiger Woods' "self doubt" when playing majors. Watch 'Morning Drive' Weekdays at 7AM ET.with Ballesteros. Took a 2-iron out and hit up against the wall. Jay Haas told me in all the years he played with Tom Watson. He had never seen him changed clubs once he picked the club. He never won another major championship after that moment. Tiger, I guess we could say a post-scandal maybe. I would never use a word self-doubt. Why is it hard for Tiger Woods up until that point? His putting now to me reeks of self-doubt. He's become very ordinary in that regard. It's hard to use that word when we're talking about Tiger Woods' ordinary. But if you look at that putt he hit on the first hole on Sunday from 4 feet. It was weak.
