No shock: Mediate leads Champions Tour opener
Lanny Wadkins and Bob Papa recap Round 1 of the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai.-Rocco Mediate who had 2 wins in his rookie year on the Champions Tour starting out 2014 in fine form here at the Mitsubishi Electric Championships at Hualalai. An opening round 9-under par 63, Lennie. -Well, he did. He did a lot of spectacular things, beautiful pitching over the bunker at number 7, holed a mile of putts but all in all it looked like a very solid round by Rocco. I didn't see any rust or mistakes at all in his game today. -One of the keys to this golf course in your opinion is to play the par 5's well and in the opening round Fred Couples 6-under on the 4 par 5's. -Well, you have to get the par 5's. There was no wind at all today and, you know, the wind is the only defense Hualalai has, and if there's no wind I don't care how tough you make the hole locations. These players are still gonna go flag hunting. And then with no wind they're reaching all the par 5's in 2. Thus we saw a lot of eagles and a boatload of birdies. -And the weather forecast for Saturday is pretty much the same, not a lot of wind. So I would think the par 5's kind of play
