College connection: ACC, SEC successful at TPC
Charlie Rymer reports on the number of ACC and SEC players that are in the hunt at the 2015 Players Championship. Watch Morning Drive on Golf Channel.last night, fairly late, from Happ Lathrop, who's executive director of the South Carolina Golf Association, and he was beaming, because if you look at the pairings today, and those last four pairings, he's got four players that are a product of golf in South Carolina , and all the great folks that do, wonderful work for golf in, what is a very small state. And I'm a product of South Carolina myself. But if you look at the connection, it goes a little bit deeper than that to the South, because the last Eight pairings. The players either have nine players either have ties to the ACC, SEC, Florida, South Carolina , or Georgia. So, what, what does that tell us about this leaderboard, Chris? Well, that tells me it's the grass. You look at the Bermuda grass, and it is a tricky grass to play on. The greens not so much, but it's more around the greens. It's the rough, it's knowing the flyers, it's knowing how to pitch around the greens. Um, you know, the grain on the greens. There's a lot of things that go with it and a lot of these guys grew up with it. And it is always easier. To, to, to do that when you've grown up doing it. I know around the greens, it's difficult to chip most people when they've just came from the West Coast , they look at it, you know, you just kind of hit it outta there. Here, you've gotta almost hit a bunker shot out of this rough to get around, get it on the green, and have it land the way you want it to land. And, and that's something that's really hard for the, for the folks at home To, to have the confidence to get into a lie, round the green, open that club face up and really get aggressive with it. Absolutely. We saw Phil Mickelson do that on 14 the other day. We've seen a lot of guys take some really big swings from the rough, because
Stat Man: Zurich Classic favors Tour nonwinners
GolfChannel.com associate editor Will Gray previews the 2014 Zurich Classic in this edition of Stat Man.over DA Points. So that may bode well for a guy like Ryan Palmer , who was a runner up last month in a play off at the Honda Classic, and who averages 4.29 birdies per round. That's fourth for the season on the PGA tour and the most of anyone in this week's field. Final number this week is four. Not the number of hand grenades I drank during filming of this segment but instead the consecutive number of Zurich winners that hail from SCC schools. This is event is held deep in SCC country and players from that conference have had a tight grip on the trophy in recent years. Last year's winner Billy Horschel played his college golf at the University of Florida, and before that you had Jason Dufner from Auburn, Bubba Watson from the University of Georgia, and Jason Bohn from the University of Alabama. Past winners also include Steve Flesch from Kentucky who won in 03 and in 2001, hometown boy and LSU grad David Toms took home the trophy. So look
