I'm faced with a very difficult lie. Ended up in an old divot . Sometimes, they're centered. This one is not. So, I don't have too many options here. My first thought is I probably need a lofted club just to get it out of there. Because if I would use a 7 iron here, I would just hit it into the front of the divot . So, I'm gonna probably choose a lob wedge or sand wedge, put it back in my stance somewhat so I'd catch the -
Check Your Divot Pattern

this guy out. -I didn't think you'd ever do that, take a divot out of a mat. Congratulations, that's a first, Roger. -Strong wrist. -Okay, you just mentioned some things happen in threes in golf, and your angle of attack is, you know, certainly how deep the divot is will tell you a lot about being steep or maybe too shallow, getting the club in too far behind you. I know it's death for me if I ever look down and see my divot going right and the ball starts left, I got a problem, because I wanna be way hung back. I wanna be back and I'm gonna be footing the club over, so that really causes me a problem when I don't get my arms back in front of me on the way down. So there are telltale signs, you know, preferably I think you want the divot going at the hole, but probably a little bit left to the hole. -A little bit, yeah. And what I see withAnd then-- and then as a result, they don't look at their divot , 'cause their divot can tell so much, and then - and it's really big to look at the right angle of attack into the ball. Not enough people really pay attention to the bottom of their swing, and one thing I noticed a lot of people is, they go, boy, my practice swing is wonderful. And I go, really? Show me. And then they take a practice swing and the club bottoms out about this far behind the ball, and divot angles way out to the right. And yet, when they get in there and actually hit their shot, the next thing I look at, you know, the divot's about this deep, and it's angling about 45 degrees left and it's over there by their left foot. And so I'm going -

got 2 things on almost every shot, the ball flight and your divot . Look at the ball flight. Pay attention to where it starts. Pay attention to the shape of the shot and pay attention to the trajectory of the shot. All of those are gonna tell you lots of different things about your golf swing, but I always like to look at the divot and the- where the divot starts. In other words, if it starts and it's fairly square, then you know you've come in to the ball squarely and I always look at the- if the divot is uniform. In other words, if it's a deeper here, then you know you've come in toe deep and your hands are higher than they should be at impact. You don't often see it deeper on the hillside. I think Lee Trevino, one of the few players that ever came in with his hands perhaps lower than they were at address, but for the most part, you want to see the divot level all the way across, square at the start and close to square at the end. It's a great looking divot you want to see that it's going down the line that you want the ball to start on, and when it is -
