gotta move that. -if I can another alignment rod, it would be good. -Okay. -Do ..... its place. So I have a student grip an alignment rod in the left-- -Here, let's ..... and through trying to keep both rods in alignment and that's rhythm, and what most students
want that stick there? You gotta move that. -if I can another alignment rod, it would be good. -Okay. -Do you mind if I grab that? -Yeah, absolutely. -And rhythm, well, what is rhythm? Rhythm in a golf swing as I said earlier is everything has a place; everything's in its place. So I have a student grip an alignment rod in the left-- -Here, let's-- let's move back over here-- -And then I have a-- -so that they can get all the cameras to see you. -align a rod in the right hand where they're both vertically aligned and horizontally aligned like this, and I'll have them just simply trace a straight line along the ground which would be their baseline,-- -Yeah. -and I have them trace it back and through trying to keep both rods in alignment and that's rhythm, and what most students will do is when they're doing this in a two-foot motion back and through, you'll see the left arm move or the right wrist move, and that's out of rhythm. So we try to keep them both in alignment vertically and horizontally, and I ask them, "What are your hands doing at this point?" And they look down at the handsclub properly and the club shaft and the left arm are in alignment , I'll have them set up and just a very simple drill, taking the club back about 2 feet and through approximately 2 feet with no changes in their hand and wrist alignments. So it looks something like this,-- -Beautiful. -and when they finished, they'll see that there's a flat left wrist there, and then I'll add alignment rods for the same drill and sit them down properly, and go from there where they begin to become aware of the -

I'm just gonna set up a couple of things here, use my alignment rods to paint a picture for you and then I'm gonna get a golf ball in here, actually I'm gonna put onejust a little bit, you could see right here I've got this alignment rod hanging over the center alignment rod, when I go like this with my upper body you could see that alignment rod move back behind that line right there. I'll do that again. So, I go from here to here, and if Itilt back like this with my upper body you can see that alignment rod get behind the golf ball right there. So, right here I'm over that ball and now I tilt my spine back -

tilt this way so that that leading edge of the alignment rod gets right up there to that knee or points ..... you to make sure that you're gonna turn this alignment rod back to that alignment rod right there. If I'm going like this
just gonna tilt this way so that that leading edge of the alignment rod gets right up there to that knee or points right to your toe. So you get set like this, this isis I want you to make sure that you're gonna turn this alignment rod back to that alignment rod right there. If I'm going like this, that is not a turn. You can see how this forward part of the alignment rod did not get back to the trail alignment rod there. So it goes there. Now I've got a good turn. So you're gonna do this drill right here. This isthat body moving back like that. So between Happy Harry and the alignment rods, we're gonna be a good shape back there, all right? That's how we're gonna get behind that ball. Now the biggest -

clubface up. So, I'm gonna use this alignment rod, I'm gonna get set into this ..... just gonna start at square. I lay the alignment rod so that it points right down to my ..... set that leading edge right along that alignment rod. That's gonna be the standard
how we're gonna open the clubface up. So, I'm gonna use this alignment rod, I'm gonna get set into this-- to this ball right there-- here. And I'm just gonna start at square. I lay the alignment rod so that it points right down to my toe like that. And when I set up, what I wanna do is I want to take the face of the club, and set that leading edge right along that alignment rod. That's gonna be the standard bunker shot. So, by using that alignment rod right there, what we're gonna do is we're gonna get an idea of what that face is supposed to look like.stance with the clubface open. Now, when we start to talk about alignment , here is my alignment . So, that's gonna be where I want this ball to go with the flag. What I want is I want my feetthis. If I can get this club somewhere in between, these two alignment rods are in this channel, somewhere in there. That's all I've got to do. All I've got to do is get this -
The Golf Fix: Fixing Common Mistakes - March 12, 2012
put this down and I'm gonna grab this alignment rod right here, and this is what I want ..... clubhead in between my heal and this alignment rod because when I start to get this ..... want you to do is I want you to utilize alignment rods. So many times I see players come
okay? So let me put this down and I'm gonna grab this alignment rod right here, and this is what I want you to do. I want you to focus on making sure that thatI've almost got an entire clubhead in between my heal and this alignment rod because when I start to get this shoulder to tilt like this, all of a sudden, that's where my ball positionthat I want you to do is I want you to utilize alignment rods. So many times I see players come out to the practice tee and they aren't putting down alignment rods, and what happens is just as you can practice yourself into a bad habit-- I mean to a good habit, you can practice yourself into a bad habit, and one of the most important things that you can do is align yourself properly. So when you're out on the practice tee, take advantage of the fact that you can utilize instructional tools. You can't do this when you're on the golf course. On the practice tee is when you're building your habits, so make sure that you utilize everything you can to build good habits, not bad habits, all right? So, what I've got is I've got 2 alignment rods set up here, and I'm working on a target there and I'm working on a shot, so I've spent enough time making sure that-- and by the way, I wanna tell you something else. When I practice and when I'm using alignment rods, I tee the ball up, and I tee the ball up because I wanna be in the same place every time. When the ball's on the tee, there's just something that makes you feel a little bit easier. Don't be afraid to practice with a tee. I remember being at Augusta National when I was working down there, and I watched Nick Faldo tee a ball up for over 2 hours on every single shot. If it's good enough for a six-time Major champion, probably good enough for you, all right? So, tee the ball up. Set these alignment rods, and what I want you to do is I want you to just make sure that your alignment is correct every time, that your feet are parallel; shoulders are parallel; ball position is the same, and you're gonna spend time -

The first one what you're gonna do is you're gonna get an alignment rod. Now, what Tiger was doing and, again, Tommy I think in a downline shot here is gonna be very good. So, what Tiger had going on was when he was taking the club back, he would-- he would let this club go out away from his forearms rotating. You could see that my hands are kind of over this club shaft the whole way. I mean, there's alignment rod the whole way and then it goes up like this and it gets on to playing like this. So what happens -

Okay, here's the big three of the setup. We're gonna talk about alignment . We're going to talk about ball position and we're going to talk about posture. We're gonna talk about those three and then I'm gonna tie it together with a routine that you can take at the golf course. Alignment -- number one, alignment . What are we aiming? Well, a lot of people think you're aiming a line across your shoulders. You're aiming a line across--best players always aim the clubface first and then take their body alignment off the clubface. Now, when I say aim the clubface first, I mean, they aim the bottom edge of the club towards -
