The Golf Fix: Grip it and rip It
as the most important thing in the game of golf is the grip and really how you hold this club and it's so important. I wanted to talk to you about it. How about that? Now, let me tell you the different types of grips that there are. There's the 10 finger grip. That's when all of the fingers are on the club. They call it the baseball grip. Okay. All of the fingers of both hands are on the club. Then, there's a 9-finger grip or the Vardon grip after Harry Vardon. This where you're taking the pinky and you're putting it on top, the pinky of your trail hand and you're putting it on top of the first knuckle of the lead hand like that. There's also an interlocking grip. This is the grip that Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods use and this is when you interlock the pinky of the trail hand and the index finger of the lead hand, and there's a double overlapping. This is a grip that is a grip that is not as common, but it is out on tour. Jim Furyk uses this grip, and this is where you take the last 2 fingers of your trail hand and you put them on so there only 8 fingers on the club. Okay. And this is the grip that you're gonna use so that the club face is a little bit slower. If you have a tendency of hitting a hook, you might experience with this grip. It could be effective. Now, what I wanna tell you the most important part of how you hold the club, which ever one you choose. The most important part is the club comes in to your hand. Most of you are having a difficult time of the club coming into your hand because you've got to coming into the hand across the palm like this so that the fingers are actually acting like a vise and they're pushing against the palm. So, when you look at that position of the left hand, this part of the thumb and that knuckle of the index finger they are on the same line. If I draw a line right across the grip like that, they are right there on the same level. What I wanna have happened is want the shaft of the club ..... gonna struggle with your game. So, pay very close attention to the grip. That's gonna help your game. What will also help your game is to watch the golf fix every Monday night at 7

Change your grip for more distance
Do you have suggestions, Martin?" I have. If you use an overlap grip, or an interlock grip, and more distance is your wish, you should try using a two-handed grip, sometimes called the baseball grip, sometimes called the ten-finger grip, I call it two-handed grip. Why would that work? Well, it gives you a bit more leverage on the back swing a bit more wrist cut, more of a 2-lever type of stroke, and if you can turn it to a 2-lever stroke, and keep those levers at a line until the right time, you're going to hit the ball further. So, I like the two-handed grip for more distance; it gives a better set going back from-- I'm going to give you a liitle rhyme for the down swing, if more distance is your wish. On the way down, move the grip with your hip, move the grip with your grip, get your legs going before the hands, hips before the hands, hands work here but hips before the hands, and here we go, two-handed grip, going to set those wrist a bit earlier, and then I'm going to move the grip with the hip, I'm going to get the hips moving before the hands, here we go, and that's definitely going to give me a bit more speed. Now, why don't you see the top guys on tour doing that? Because it is not quiet as accurate, they don't need the distance but you might. So, try that two-handed grip, it'll definitely help. Thanks for joining us on golfchannel.com for the best in golf instructions, I'm Martin Hall, make sure you go

So here we go. Now, my hope here is that you will watch this more than once, maybe many times ..... look at the grips of the best players, here is where the grip sits. I'm turning sideways here, it's in one finger, and the heel pad is going to be below the club so I'm ..... the golf club. Now I also like, I think in the golf grip, that the thumb in that first thing, you should lie about the same, there should be no gaps. How can I have

School of Golf: The Grip - February 1, 2011
we focus on the building block to better golf, talking about the grip. Now, we're here every Tuesday from our studio. The teacher, this man right here, Martin Hall, Golf Channel Instructor Search winner and ..... plan tonight, we're gonna talk about the three P's to a perfect grip, we're gonna have Brittany Lincicome, LPGA major championship winner, on the set, and I'm going to reveal the most important move in golf according to Bobby Jones. I don't think it's changed in 100 years. -I don't wanna miss that. I'm sure they don't either. Back to the topic of the grip, just how important is it? How vital to the game? -Well, it's only important if you want to hit it long, hit it straight, be consistent, and have a good shot-- -Is that all-- -all of that, it really doesn't matter at all. It's absolutely vital. Harvey Penick said if you have a bad grip, you don't want a good golf swing. How true that is. Now, with regard to the grip, there are, of course, three types of grip. There's a two-handed grip, there's an overlap grip, and there's an interlock grip. Now, of those three, the most deficient one I see on the golf course all the time is what I've termed the 'inter-loose' grip, where people actually, they think they're doing an interlock but in fact they're doing 'inter-loose' so for goodness sakes, if you're going to do the interlock, make sure it's an interlock. Now, I'm not going to talk a lot about those 'cause I don't think it really matters. The two-handed grip is probably best for the youngsters for power. -Okay. -The interlock grip is probably best for strong players like Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus for consistency, and the sort of the hybrid between them is the one most of us use which is the overlap grip, but nevertheless, whether you use two-handed, whether you use overlap or interlock, some of these things must be present for you to have a good grip that will let you swing with speed and square the clubface, so I get to the three P's-- -Yes. -of the perfect grip-- -Do tell. -Now, the first one is what I call 'professional.' You need to have a professional grip. I've been influenced profoundly on the grip by a work from Steve Elkington. He wrote a book called the Five Fundamentals. It's got the best stuff on the grip I've ever seen. His teacher, Alex Mercer, said there is no reason whatsoever that you shouldn't have a professional grip. You may not have enough talent to swing like a Tour pro but it takes zero talent to get a professional grip. I don't talk about looking at the knuckles and I don't talk about the V. It isn't that I don't notice that but the reason I don't talk about it, it's never worked very well for me on the golf course, it never worked on the range when I'm teaching. What's worked so much better for the 3 P's, the first one being professional, is this: This is a sort of a Harvey Penick-Davis Love-type grip and I'd-- I'd suggest if you're working, if you're at home there in the snow, get yourself a yardstick, and get used to putting the hands...on the side. I say the hands, I mean the palms. Get used to putting the palms on the side of the grip. My great friend from Atlanta, Jack-- Tom Ness talks about "clap, clap, chop, chop." What a lovely way to think of the palms going on the club. Clap, clap, chop, chop. Left palm on the side of the club, right palm on the side. I swear gripping the club will be better if the USGA would let us play the flat-sided clubs, which is probably why they don't. Flat, flat. So, get a yardstick, get the palms on the side of the grip. That's part of precision-- part of professional, I'm sorry. The second part of professional would be this. Again, from the great Harvey ..... tees in there, so those are the three P's to a good grip. You've gotta be professional, you've gotta be precise, and you've gotta get the right pressure. -Pressure! I like that last one. Everybody, you know, can always put too much pressure in the hands and it can really mess up your shot. We've got a lot more coming. In fact, you can get some Extra Credit. Message to all of you out there. If you'd like more help improving your grip, he's got more tips online. They are ready for you. happening here with RJ is he's taking the club back and the grip position is really quite good. Typically, we see this position from a poor grip where the wrists don't allow the way the grip is set. It doesn't allow the wrist to hinge and we end up hinging in the elbow, but RJ's grip is actually-- It's a very good grip , but what's happening is he gets up here like this and then this is just all collapsing into him. And I don'ta ball right here. What I want to do is I wanna grip down on this so that I can see the grip there. And I wanna take the club back and I wanna put the grip so that it's pointing and send a camera to here Savi. If you can see right there, I wanna see where this-- where this grip is pointing. And what happens to many people is they take the club and they go like this and now the grip isn't pointing anywhere near that channel. What I wanna have happen is I want that grip to point into that channel right there. And when that grip points into that channel, now I've got the club on plane. Now, the question is what am I doing with my wristsgolf clubs. And as you can see right here, this pitching wedge grip , this is a 6-iron grip and this is a driver grip . What you can see is the pitching wedge grip is shorter than the 6-iron and the 6-iron is shorter than the driver, which means that the clubs, as they get longer, -

And then we come back out and we got setup issues or grip issues or whatever it is. So I wanna make sure that during this off-time you're paying attention to the fundamentals. And the first place to start is with the grip . So I just wanna go over this quickly for you here. When you hold this club, what I'm looking for is I'm looking for the thumb to be farther down the shaft than the first knuckle of the index finger with that V right there, that line going to the right shoulder, and then the trail hand is gonna cover up that thumb go right through the lifeline of the trail hand and cover that up with the V of the trail hand going to the same spot. So that's what your grip is gonna look like right there, and that's all gonna go right to this shoulder right here, all right? So you make sure that you got your grip set in the correct position. Then there are 4 body lines that we concern ourselves with when we get set up properly. The first one is which suggest doing when you're paying attention to all this stuff, always go from ground to head. So whatever you're thinking about, if you've got an issue going on with your knees and you wanna deal with what's going on with your grip , I would always go floor to ceiling. That's how it's easiest for you to remember. So we're concerned with the line ofguest, our first PGA Tour guest of the year talk about the grip , take a peek. -One of the first things is to, you know, kind of soften that left hand a little bit andsure that that hanger is going right up that and through that grip , so that when you get set up in that position right there, you can see that you could barely even see. swing, you have what would be termed a very strong left hand grip . Now the interesting thing is before we came here, I was talking to your father and I said has anybody said anything about Austin's grip , thinking that someone would've said to you your grip is too strong. He said yes. His grip was way too weak meaning the back of the hand was to the ground and I suggested he turned his hand over. You've overdone that by some and a bit and I'm actually going to talk to you about the grip in a different way. I don't like talking about turning the hand over, turning it under. -Yes. -There was a great teacher from Austin, Texas called Harvey Penick and he said he hated people twisting the arm. I'm gonna give you a different way to put your hands on the club, and in your case the reason I think this is important is you have a grip that is strong and yet interestingly enough, you get the face of the club in a beautiful position at the top, whichthat a little bit, but the big thing is gonna be the grip of the wrist cock. Are you ready? -Yes. -Let's get to it then. You seem like you're a very good student, sothe club and therefore it's also the best place to take the grip . Now watch how I do this. This will save you a lot of pain and horror in your golfing career that I have to endure. If your left hand sits like so, just take your grip with the left hand by the side, take your grip by the left hand, by the side of your body right there. Arm can be straight. That's the perfect place to take the left hand grip . Now what you're going to find is wherever your left-- that doesn't feel twisted, does it? -No. -You didn't think about where your knuckles were, did you? -No. -You didn't think about where that V is. You don't have to. This is how you're designed for your left arm dangling. We're all a bit different so however the left arm hangs, that's where you should take the grip and that's how you should just hold the club. Now once you've done that with your left hand, then you can bring that club up here with your left hand and put your right hand on, and I think your right hand is very good. Now that should feel just a little bit different an awful lot, but I sort of what I'd say I got that grip a bit more neutral, but not by you trying to twist it. Okay. Now let's take a couple of practice swings with that grip now, and I think from there with that grip Austin Cherichello you should be able to feel a bit more wrist cock and that feels a bit more wrist cock, doesn't it? -Yes. -That's going to make the ball go farther and then you get to say thank you, Martin. They are the 3 most important words in golf, you know. Thank you, Martin. All right. So let's reset that grip one more time please. Reset that grip . Yes. Just absolutely, there you go. Pull the club back in front of you. Put your right hand on. I call this shadow golf. Now swing back and let's have a bit of wrist, let's have a bit more wrist action here, a bit more give, a bit more angle. That's right and then just swish it on the way through. All right.
