In Play: Van de Velde's collapse
In Play commemorates the 15th anniversary of one of the most shocking conclusions in major history. Jean Van De Velde infamously became a symbol for meltdowns in golf at the 1999 Open Championship, but he has not given in to bitterness, nor missed an opportunity to positively influence those around him. His ‘c’est la vie’ approach to life’s challenges have led to his becoming the French Ambassador for UNICEF, an instrumental force in bringing the 2018 Ryder Cup to France, and to becoming a powerful inspiration for young and successful French golfers like Victor Dubuisson, Romain Wattel, and Alexander Levy. Although living large and going big have sometimes brought him misfortune, van de Velde has still managed to consistently make a positive impact on French golf.
