British Open Raises Purse

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland -- This summer's British Open champion will receive a modest boost in prize money.
The winner's share will be about $1.3 million at the current exchange rate. A year ago, the share was $1.12 million at the July 2003 rate.
Total prize money for the July 15-18 tournament will be about $7.2 million, up from last year's $6.24 million. Second place will be worth $775,000, with $495,000 for third.
A year ago, a British pound was worth about $1.60, and it's now about $1.80. The pound's rise against the U.S. dollar would benefit players who convert their winnings to American currency.
