Burke Jones Chosen As Ryder Cup Aides

04 Ryder CupLA QUINTA, Calif. -- Former majors winners Jackie Burke and Steve Jones were chosen Tuesday as assistant captains for the U.S. Ryder Cup team.
'Jackie Burke is one of the most knowledgeable people in the game,' team Ryder Cup captain Hal Sutton said. 'Steve Jones was a great player in his own right.'
The 35th Ryder Cup will be played at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., in September.
While the American squad for the match against Europe won't be selected until later this year, Sutton was pleased that former Masters and PGA champion Burke, and former U.S. Open winner Jones are joining him now.
'They're going to be my right hands,' Sutton said in the press tent on the eve of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. 'I'll confer with them on difficult issues.'
Sutton noted that he and Jones are contemporaries and that Jones also can offer the Americans some sage advice.
'He won the U.S. Open championship at Oakland Hills in 1996, so he'll give us some good vibes there,' Sutton said.
Burke is a two-time captain of the Ryder Cup team.
