Curtis Leads Taiheiyo Masters

GOTEMBA, Japan -- British Open champion Ben Curtis shot a 7-under-par 65 Thursday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Taiheiyo Masters.
Curtis offset his only bogey with eight birdies at the Taiheiyo Club's Gotemba course, and led Japan's Jumbo Ozaki and Kiyoshi Murota by a stroke.
'It was nice to finish at the top on the first day,' Curtis said. 'I still had a few missed shots that I need to work on but I'm looking forward to the rest of the week.'
Curtis, who started at No. 10, birdied his first two holes before making bogey at the par-4 15th. He rebounded with a birdie at No. 16 and added four more during his round.
