Eighteen-Year-Old Wins in Japan

TAMAGASUKU, Japan -- Eighteen-year-old Ai Miyazato became the youngest player to win on the Japanese LPGA tour Sunday with a victory at the season-opening Daikin Orchid Ladies golf tournament.
Overnight leader Miyazato carded four birdies against a pair of bogeys at the Ryukyu Golf Club in Okinawa for a 54-hole total of 10-under 206 and a three-stroke lead over tour veteran Kaori Higo. It was also her first win since turning professional last October.
'It's a thrill to win on this course,' said Miyazato, who is from Okinawa. 'I want to thank my family and all the fans who supported me. I was just hoping to make the cut here.'
Miyazato won the gold medal in women's golf at the 2002 Asian Games is Busan, South Korea. Last September, she became the first amateur player in 30 years to win on the Japanese pro circuit at the Miyagi TV Cup.
