Lahey Leads USGA Womens Sr Amateur

USGAST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- Ann Lahey shot a 1-over 72 on Saturday to take the first-round lead in stroke-play qualifying for the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship on the Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course.
The 54-year-old Lahey, from Kentfield, Calif., had four birdies and five bogeys in windy conditions on the 5,832-yard course to take a one-stroke lead over Mimi Hoffman, 50, of Springfield, Va., and Nancy Smith, 59, of North Port, Fla.

'I just kept it in play,' Lahey said. 'I wanted to hit the fairways and then hit it up somewhere by the green. With those collection areas around the green, you can't get too fancy. You have to play conservative and hope you make some putts.'
Carol Semple Thompson, the 57-year-old star from Sewickley, Pa., who won four consecutive Senior Women's Amateur titles from 1999-02, shot a 79.
The top 64 after the second round of qualifying Sunday will advance to match play.
