President of Pebble Beach Co Dies at 52

John M. Chadwell, president and chief operating officer of Pebble Beach Co., has died of cancer. He was 52.
Chadwell, appointed president of Pebble Beach Co. in May 1996, died Wednesday at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
Prior to becoming president, he served as vice president of resort operations. He also had served as general manager of The Inn at Spanish Bay.
One of Chadwell's passions was food and wine, and he dedicated most of his life to expert culinary service. At Pebble Beach Resorts, Chadwell introduced the practice of partnering with renowned chefs.
He was the creative vision behind many of Pebble Beach's restaurants, including Roy's, Peppoli, Stillwater Bar and Grill and Club XIX.
Chadwell was born in New York in 1949, and spent his life in the hospitality industry, growing up in the business following his mother and stepfather as they managed hotels around the globe.
He is survived by his mother, Merry Stephen; his daughters, Katherine and Merry, all of Pebble Beach; and his son, Mikey of Orlando, Fla.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
