Sorenstam Adds Name to New Event in 07

Ladies Professional Golf AssociationA $2.6 million LPGA event will be played in Charleston, SC, in 2007, a week following the Senior PGA Championship staged at Kiawah Island's Ocean Course.
The event, the Ginn Tribute hosted by Annika Sorenstam, will be held May 31-June 3 at the RiverTowne Country Club in nearby Mount Pleasant.
'It's exciting news. It's a great event coming up on our schedule,' Sorenstam told The (Charleston) Post and Courier. 'We'll try to attract the best players and really make it a special event.'
The purse for the tournament, which will be televised by NBC, is one of the richest payoffs of any LPGA event.
It's the second big money event to the staged by Ginn Sports Entertainment. Mi Hyun Kim won the $2.5 million Ginn Open in Reunion, Fla., in late April.
'The purses are growing tremendously. I think this will be one of the first tournaments players put on their schedule,' Sorenstam said.
'About this time last year, we announced plans for the Ginn Open at Reunion,' said Kent Atherton, president and chief operating officer of Ginn Sports Entertainment. 'That event exceeded our expectations in a lot of ways and has given us the confidence to expand that relationship.'
Atherton said the tournament would try to attract Michelle Wie with an exemption. She did not play in this year's Ginn Open because of her high school schedule, but Atherton said he hopes the Ginn Tribute dates will be more compatible.
Ginn Clubs and Resorts is based in Celebration, Fla., but founder Bobby Ginn grew up in Hampton, S.C.
He has been involved real estate developments in South Carolina, including Wild Dunes and Dunes West near Charleston. Ginn Clubs operates RiverTowne and Patriots Point Golf Links in Mount Pleasant.
