Toms Back Ahead of Schedule

A week ahead of his original schedule, Shreveport's David Toms will return to the PGA Tour after missing two months because of hand surgery.
David TomsToms is in Los Angeles and is entered in this week's Nissan Open. If everything goes as planned for the next few days, Toms will tee it up Thursday at Riviera Country Club. The first round would be just six days after playing his first golf hole of the year at Squire Creek Country Club near Ruston.
Toms is raring to go in what is an important season on the PGA Tour. Every good finish before the middle of August is big, considering that this is a Ryder Cup year.
'I'd have to put that at the top of the list,' said Toms, who began chipping around Jan. 18. 'That's why I'm anxious to get back and get started, try and play well. Hopefully I'll play well enough early so there's not as much pressure coming down the last month or so, win a tournament, or have enough top finishes to get enough points so I'll be OK.'
Toms, the leading point getter for the U.S. in the 2002 Ryder Cup, won the 2001 PGA Championship, the last points event, to earn a spot on the 2002 squad. He currently stands sixth in Ryder Cup points. The top 10 and two captain's picks will play for the United States in Michigan in September.
