Toms Out of Open Championship

135th Open Championship HOYLAKE, England -- Former PGA champion David Toms withdrew from the British Open because of back problems, an injury that forced him from the U.S. Open.
His spot will be taken by fellow American Jeff Sluman, organizers said Friday. The British Open runs July 20-23 at Royal Liverpool.
Toms, who beat Phil Mickelson by a stroke to win the 2001 PGA title, was hurt in the first round of the U.S. Open in June.
