Weir, a Brigham Young alumnus, chipped a golf ball from midcourt as part of a promotion for a local sandwich chain. If he hit the backboard, everybody in the crowd of 22,718 would get a free soda. If the ball went through the basket, it was a free sandwich.
Weir took nine shots and hit either the backboard or rim with six, but didn't quite get one through the basket.
The Canadian left-hander, a native of Bright's Grove, Ont., makes his home in Draper, Utah.
The Cougars defeated Utah 70-57.
