Wie Learns Lesson at Royal Lytham

2006 Weetabix WomenLYTHAM ST. ANNES, England -- Michelle Wie said she learned more struggling around the Royal Lytham course at the Women's British Open than she did all the times she's come close to winning a tournament.
The best lesson of all was how Sherri Steinhauer mastered the course.
While 16-year-old Wie wound up in a tie for 26th after a 6-over finish, 43-year-old Steinhauer got her third British Open victory by three strokes, and her first since it became a major.
After last week's tie for second at the Evian Masters, three third-place and two fifth-place finishes, Wie is still chasing her first tournament victory. Although she seems likely to eventually pass Steinhauer's total of seven before she turns 20, the teenager could have done with some of the new champion's tactics this weekend.
Steinhauer played no-risk golf, hitting low, making par after par by finding virtually every fairway and green and staying out of the bunkers until she was sure of the title at the 18th green. That bogey 5 meant she finished at level par 72 for the round.
Wie not only found bunkers, she took six shots to get out of three of them, twice at the 15th and once while going down the final fairway.
'I think strangely enough that I learned more here this week than I did all summer,' Wie said. 'I played great all summer and played good in this tournament. Just a couple of shots did not go the way I wanted them to. But today, yesterday and the day before, I learned so much.'
Learned what?
'How to play the game, really,' Wie replied. 'Playing a links golf course really forces you to play golf. I learned to try and be patient out there. When things go bad, you have to play through it and make some putts when you have to. That's what I did today and I am going to move forward.'
The first time Steinhauer won the British Open title was here at Lytham in 1998 when Wie was 8-years-old.
