Most people assume casting a show is a scientific process, combine x, y, z and boom, dynamite. In reality, the process is more of an art mixed with a bit of alchemy, and a dash of uncertainty that always makes the first few episodes exciting for us, because we never know how things are going to turn out. As producers, we go through a period of watching personalities develop and contrast without really knowing when the pot will bubble over, and how explosive that might be. Mary definitely got the fireworks going at the range this episode. I remember watching live and realizing that my expectations had been quite wrong. I assumed Mary would be the funniest person on the cast based on her audition; I never anticipated that she would be so bellicose.

And that wasn’t the biggest surprise this episode. I expected Lindsay to be the sweetheart of the show with the quirky sense of humor, but with the chips were down and elimination looming, she showed a ruthless, strategic side that I hadn’t seen or expected from her. Near the end of the show she has a conversation with Mary explaining how she tricked Courtney into choosing Mary. Naturally, within short order, everyone on the cast knew, and it was like a switch flipped in everyone’s head. In my interviews that night, it was clear that the cast was working out that any weakness that they expressed in front of other contestants could, and would, be used against them. It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out through the rest of the season.

We threw out a tweet this week asking viewers to send their questions about the show to the @BigBreak account with the #AskBigBreak hashtag. Keep sending those in, and we’ll be picking some occasionally to answer.

Our first question is from @natbirdgolfs: “When can females apply for their opportunity to be on the Big Break”

Natalie, you’re in luck, applications are currently available here. If you don’t hear back, keep an eye on the @BigBreak twitter account, as we usually announce auditions anytime we’re actively casting.

@drumdog98 asks, “Being a Wa. State Native, how did we get so many entrants?”

Well, Bill, we do auditions across the country for each season, and this year we ran into some interesting people from the Pacific Northwest. Maybe it has something to do with the weather? Or the coffee?

That’s all for this week, stay tuned!
