PGA TOUR spokesman Bob Combs added that an active analysis was ongoing at the TOUR in the event that conditions worsened. Wilson said the fires there have gotten within a mile of the golf course, but no damage has been reported.
Closer to the ocean, there was also concern at Torrey Pines, the site of next year's U.S. Open. David Fay, the USGA's executive director, issued these words: 'At this point, Torrey Pines Courses are not in any immediate fire danger but they are enshrouded in dark, smoky clouds. Our folks on the scene couldn't see the Pacific yesterday from the clubhouse.'
Meanwhile, just a few miles away in Rancho Sante Fe, a mandatory evacuation order remained in effect which meant, among other things, that local resident Phil Mickelson and his family would not be sleeping in their own beds Tuesday night.
Finally, nearer to Los Angeles, officials at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks were breathing easier. Sherwood is north of Malibu, where fires have destroyed millions of dollars worth of homes, but the site of Tiger Woods' Target World Challenge has remained open throughout. Allison Curdt, Sherwood's head teaching professional, said smoke was visible over the hills toward Malibu but said no flames had been sighted. Wind conditions at the golf course Tuesday, she said, were 'a thousand per cent better.'
