In the moments before Phil Mickelson made his way to Muirfield’s 18th green on Sunday to accept the claret jug, a reporter asked about his flawless play on Sunday.

“This new Callaway 3-wood is unbelievable. I hit a ton of fairways,” Lefty smiled sheepishly.

Mickelson is one of the best pitchmen in the business and his response was entirely tongue and cheek, although he did hit 34 of 56 fairways for the week without a driver in the bag (T-37 in the field).

The exchange, however, did prompt an off-the-cuff follow-up question. Could he have won at Winged Foot during the 2006 U.S. Open with it?

“I don’t know that any club would have gotten to the fairway that week for me. I only hit two fairways all day,” Mickelson admitted.
