Expert Picks: 2015 Sony Open

This week marks the ninth event of the 2014-15 PGA Tour season, as the Tour conducts its first full-field event of 2015 at the Sony Open in Hawaii. Each week, a panel of experts will offer up their picks from four groups of players, based on Golf Channel's fantasy game, Fantasy Challenge. We will also keep track of their scores and standings. The panel includes: senior writers Rex Hoggard, Randall Mell and Jason Sobel; editorial director Jay Coffin; associate editor Will Gray; 'Morning Drive' host Gary Williams; host Charlie Rymer and defending fantasy champion Ryan Lavner.

Randall Mell

Group 1: Hideki Matsuyama: Looking for the talented Japanese player to finish what he started in Hawaii last week.

Group 2: Sang-Moon Bae: Trending upward nicely this wraparound season, looking for a peak this week.

Group 3: Brian Stuard: Waialae has been awfully good to him with T-6 and T-5 finishes his last two years.

Group 4: Mark Wilson: It doesn’t seem that long ago (2011) he was hoisting a trophy at Waialae.

Rex Hoggard

Group 1: Jason Day: The Australian’s fortunes have always hinged on his health and Monday’s course-record-tying 62 at Kapalua is a good indication that he is putting some distance between himself and the DL.

Group 2: Brendon Todd: Pick a University of Georgia alum and chances are you’ll have a good week and following his tie for eighth at the Hyundai Todd seems to be as good a Bulldog as any.

Group 3: Boo Weekley: The pride of Milton, Fla., has a solid history at windswept, tight layouts (see RBC Heritage) and he ended last season on a high note with his runner-up finish at the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Group 4: Hudson Swafford: After a rocky freshman year on Tour he rebounded late in 2014 with three top-20 finishes in his last five starts and finished tied for eighth in his first start at Waialae last season.
