CROMWELL, Conn. – For a tournament which was once in danger of becoming a Champions Tour event, the Travelers Championship leaderboard is feeling a little senior moment right now.
That’s because Jeff Maggert and Joe Durant – each 50 years old and eligible for the Champions circuit – opened with matching scores of 6-under 64 on Thursday.
“I've had some good opening rounds on the Tour,” Durant said. “I played good in Memphis the first day. I think I shot 4 under there and then backed it up with a 75 and missed the cut. I'm trying a little too hard out here. I'm trying to make something happen all in one week. I just need to play golf and not worry about it. I'm having a great time on Champions Tour. I know my future is pretty much out there, but I still like to play out here some, too.”
“The schedule has been a lot busier than I thought it would be this year,” said Maggert, who already owns a Champions Tour win. “I played a lot of tournaments. So I wanted to come here to Hartford. It's one of my favorite courses. It really suits my game well, and I've been playing pretty well the last few months. So figured I'd come out here and see if I could beat up on these young kids.”
