Each week, GolfChannel.com takes a look back at the week in golf. In this edition of After Further Review, our writers weigh in on the thrilling conclusion of the RBC Canadian Open, where Jason Day bounced back from another near-miss in a major (T-4) last week to win for the fourth time on the PGA Tour, Lexi Thompson's chances of becoming the best player on the LPGA and an almost-happily ever after for David Hearn.
It’s not the claret jug and it won’t dull the sting of coming up short at a major championship . . . again, but Jason Day’s charging finish on Sunday at the RBC Canadian Open will go a long way to easing the blow of another Grand Slam near miss. Day, who finished a stroke outside the playoff won by Zach Johnson last week at St. Andrews for his sixth top-5 finish in a major, birdied his last three holes to win his fourth PGA Tour title on Sunday at Glen Abbey. It’s not a major, but it’s a good sign the Australian is that much closer to breaking through his Grand Slam ceiling. - Rex Hoggard
Lexi Thompson overpowered her competition at the Meijer Classic Sunday, just like she did when she won her first major, the Kraft Nabisco Championship last year. On Saturday at Blythefield Country Club, she closed out her round hitting a 331-yard drive at the 18th hole. She was shrinking holes with titanic blasts throughout the final round, too, blowing bombs past Lizette Salas and Kris Tamulis. If Thompson can fine tune her wedge game and become a more consistent putter, she’ll challenge Inbee Park, Lydia Ko and Stacy Lewis as the best player in the game. - Randall Mell
David Hearn didn't seal the deal at the RBC and end the drought of Canadians winning their national open (1954, Pat Fletcher), but you've got to give him credit. He led by two through 54 holes and birdied his first two holes out of the gate on Sunday to extend his lead. Considering it was the 36-year-old's first 54-hole lead in a PGA Tour event and that he had the hopes of an entire nation riding on his shoulders, his final-round 72 and resulting third-place finish was nothing to snuff our noses at. Many have tried. Few have succeeded. But he should take away nothing but positives from the week. - Bailey Mosier
