Rafael Cabrera-Bello, Pablo Larrazabal and Shane Lowry have been added to the field for the upcoming Open Championship by virtue of their position in the Race to Dubai.

They were the top players not already exempt within the top 20 of the European Tour’s season-long points standings. Last week’s BMW International Open was the final cutoff.

A similar qualifier is used for players in the FedEx Cup, which explains how Kevin Na and Brendon Todd were recently added to the 156-man field.

Cabrera-Bello, who lost in a playoff Sunday in Germany, will make his third Open appearance. He tied for 21st last year at Muirfield. Larrazabal, a three-time European Tour winner, will make his fifth Open start, while Lowry will look to build on his T-32 finish a year ago in his third start in the year’s third major.

The Associated Press also reported Monday that Erik Compton, Brooks Koepka, K.J. Choi, Charles Howell III and Fredrik Jacobson also can expect to play the July 17-20 Open based on the alternate list.

This week’s Greenbrier Classic (PGA Tour) and French Open (European Tour) are a continuation of the new Open Qualifying Series that awards spots to the low four players among the top 12 who are not already exempt.
