The PGA Tour announced on Tuesday that Cadillac has agreed to become the title sponsor of the 2015 WGC-Match Play.
The one-year deal expands Cadillac’s World Golf Championship portfolio. The company already sponsors the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral, and gives the Tour a year to secure a more long-term sponsor as the Match Play transitions to a new venue and format.
After eight years in Tucson, Ariz., the event is moving to TPC Harding Park in San Francisco next year and is going to a round-robin-type format that will include three days of group play.
The event is also moving to a new date next season, April 29-May 3, but officials have said the move to Harding Park and April, which will be the week before The Players Championship, are “one off” adjustments and that the event seems likely to transition to a more traditional date earlier in the year.
“I’m not so sure I like (that date) for that event (the WGC-Match Play), “ PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said earlier this month at the Tour Championship. “I’m not so sure it’s the best thing for the Match Play. It’s a venue issue as well. You can’t get too far down the road with that because sponsors like to have a voice in that.”
