HUMBLE, Texas - Defending champion J.B. Holmes withdrew from the Shell Houston Open Wednesday, citing a shoulder injury.
Holmes was slated for one of the tournament's marquee early-round groups alongside Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth, the latter of whom Holmes defeated in a playoff last year. He will be replaced in the field by alternate Luke List.
Holmes addressed the media Tuesday without discussing any potential injury. He has five top-25 finishes in seven starts this season, highlighted by T-6 finishes at both the Farmers Insurance Open and Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Holmes finished T-28 last week after failing to advance out of group play at the WGC-Dell Match Play. He is exempt into the Masters next week by virtue of his standing inside the top 50 of the Official World Golf Rankings.
