Defending champ Thompson still in ANA mix

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – Despite a disappointing water-logged finish, Lexi Thompson put herself in weekend position to successfully defend her title at the ANA Inspiration.

Thompson was part of the drama with Lydia Ko late Friday.

They both hit shots in the pond guarding the front of the 18th green to end their rounds.

Ko tried to lay up there but knocked her second shot in the water, setting up a bogey that ended her streak of consecutive rounds under par in an LPGA event at 29. She shares the modern-day record with Annika Sorenstam. Thompson tried to reach the green in two but rinsed a hybrid and made bogey.

The disappointment didn’t run as deep for Thompson. She still shot 3-under-par 69, moving her four shots behind the leader, Sei Young Kim.

“Overall, it was a very consistent day,” Thompson said. “I felt really comfortable over my tee shots and iron shots today and rolled a few good putts out there.”

Thompson was overpowering some holes again. She had her driver going straight and long.

“I definitely feel like I'm in a good spot,” Thompson said. “Today went really well for my confidence. Yesterday was a little bit erratic off the tee, but today was a lot better over the ball. So, I'm feeling really comfortable going into the weekend.”
