PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – One player not surprised to see Hideki Matsuyama’s name atop The Players leaderboard was Adam Scott, who was the Japanese player’s partner at the 2013 Presidents Cup.
The duo combined to go 1-2-1 as a team at Muirfield Village, a record Scott readily admits could have been worse if not for Matsuyama’s play.
“To be fair, the middle two rounds he really carried me around the golf course. I didn’t play my best golf and he was solid,” Scott said. “I think his focus is as good from a player that I’ve seen since Tiger Woods came out. His mental strength is his biggest asset.”
It’s a pairing International Presidents Cup captain Nick Price will likely revisit later this year when the matches are played in South Korea with Scott and Matsuyama currently second and third on that team’s points list, respectively.
