Billy Hurley III qualified Sunday for his second Open Championship, but he might not make the trip overseas.
Hurley’s sister, Megan, is getting married Saturday of Open week, and Hurley said he’d “have to get a pass” before playing at Royal Troon.
“Something tells me it’s going to be a pretty hard sell,” Hurley said Sunday night after winning the Quicken Loans National. “We’ll have to figure it out. Some of my team kept telling me: ‘If you get in the Open, you’re going. Send them a nice present, you’re going.’ I don’t know.
“That’s certainly not a foregone conclusion that I’m going, to be honest with you.”
The top four finishers at Congressional not already eligible earned a spot in the July 14-17 Open. Hurley’s only appearance in the event came in 2014, when he tied for 64th at Hoylake. He has played in only four majors overall.
Hurley is in this week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. He also earned spots in the PGA Championship and next year’s Masters.
