Illinois senior Charlie Danielson earned a spot in this week’s Northern Trust Open after shooting a bogey-free, 3-under 68 Monday in the second annual Collegiate Showcase. He won by three shots over Wake Forest's Will Zalatoris and UCLA's Jonathan Garrick.
A three-time All-American, Danielson is currently ranked fourth in the country after a win and two other top-seven finishes during the fall for No. 4 Illinois. The Northern Trust Open will be his first PGA Tour appearance.
Fourteen college golfers from around the country competed in the one-day qualifier at Riviera. The medalist earned a spot in the tournament proper later this week. Each collegiate was paired with a professional alumnus and two amateur boosters; Danielson was grouped with Scott Langley, who won the NCAA individual title in 2010.
Texas’ Beau Hossler, the highest-ranked player in the field (No. 3), shot a 1-over 72 while playing alongside Jordan Spieth. Hossler's U.S. Walker Cupper teammate, Lee McCoy, a senior at Georgia, also carded a 72.
